System Shock's legacy is that it felt like you were inhabiting a world. The legacy of Shock is that most FPSes in the last 2 decades have drawn from the style and mechanics of this nearly 30 year old FPS. While Doom was the quintessential FPS, System Shock showed a path for an explorative First person title that mixed combat, stealth, puzzle-solving, and RPG mechanics. System Shock, like Doom, was heavily influential in setting up the genres we now play. These were both 2.5D titles that presaged the move to 3D but were built for computers with game engines that artfully gave the illusion of 3D before full 3D was truly possible. These two titles, Shock and Doom, defined the transition from 2D to 3D. The original System Shock came out in Sept 1994 several months after Doom (Dec 1993). Sentient AI's are not a reality beyond the hype, but they make for great villains in Games, Tv, Film, Animation, and Books. It's fitting that during the height of AI hype, we have the release of the seminal FPS game from the mid 90s where a murderous AI kills everyone on the space station and then tries to kill the player.
